Portland Head Light sits inside Fort Williams Park, making it an easy destination for families. The 90-acre park has plenty of space for children to run, explore, and learn about local maritime history.

What is the Children's Garden?

It is an interactive natural play area near the lighthouse.

The garden encourages exploration and discovery. You should plan to spend about 30 minutes here. Kids can burn off energy while parents relax on the nearby benches.

Is there space for kids to run around?

Yes, the lighthouse is surrounded by a 90-acre recreational park.

The wide lawns offer plenty of room for flying kites or laying out a picnic blanket. The area is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. Entry to the park is free for everyone.

Can kids play on the beach near the lighthouse?

Ship Cove is a small rocky beach that sometimes reveals sand at low tide.

The water at Ship Cove is extremely cold even in the height of summer. If your kids want to wade, prepare for cold temperatures. The beach area takes about 20 minutes to explore.

Is the park safe for young children?

Yes, but you need to monitor children closely near the water.

Portland Head Light sits on a rocky headland. The 1-mile Cliff Walk Trail hugs the rocky coastline of Casco Bay. Keep kids away from the edges, as there are steep drops to the rocks below.

Are there other things for kids to see?

Children can view the remains of concrete artillery batteries.

Battery Keyes and Battery Hobart are old military structures from the park's history as an active fort. Interpretive signs explain the history. This is a quick 20-minute stop for curious kids.

What do families need to pack?

Bring layers, walking shoes, and a trash bag.

The park enforces a strict carry-in/carry-out trash policy. There are no trash cans available on the grounds. Pack a light windbreaker or fleece jacket, as the coastal breeze is often cool.
